There’s lots of good news to celebrate in New Mexico and Albuquerque right now. The unemployment rate has dropped to its lowest level since December 2008 (that’s right before the Great Recession). We’ve added almost 9,000 new jobs since this time last year. There are announcements almost every day about new businesses opening, expanding or relocating to our community.
Like Rio Bravo Brewing Company, which announced they will begin exporting their local beer to Mexico this summer. And homegrown company Lavu, adding 120 employees and new products in Downtown Albuquerque. And a new tech company, 2NDGEAR, that will begin hiring in July. Richard Heard, president of 2NDGEAR’s parent company, Insight Investments, says Albuquerque was chosen for its workforce and positive business climate.
And speaking of climate, we finally got some much-needed rain. Isn’t it funny how we all love the sun in New Mexico, yet get more exited about precipitation? The mood around town lifted measurably with each drop that fell this past week.
The economic outlook for the state is brighter than the rainbows after that good rain. Economists forecast that the improving oil and gas industry is behind the expected $158 million more in revenue than was forecasted by the state for the fiscal year that ends in July. That’s good news for teachers and public safety workers who are expected to get larger raises than anticipated this year.
In more good news, airline traffic is up at the Sunport, and Frontier Airlines has added a new nonstop destination for New Mexico travelers. And for those visiting our city, there’s a new SpringHill Suites by Marriott hotel at Paseo del Norte and I-25.
The state’s flagship university has a new president, too. The first woman to take the helm, Garnett Stokes has hit the ground running with energy and a determination to lead UNM into the future.
So, despite the doom and gloom that often surrounds us, it’s important to take a moment and enjoy the triumphs. Let’s acknowledge the moment and enjoy the wave of momentum carrying us into the future.
